J Collins:
I realized that I first wanted to do music when I was about 14. I didn’t take it serious until I was roughly 20 yrs old. That was when I really began to believe that I could make a living at it. I’ve loved music long as I can remember but it was just a hobby up until I was 20.
David Mensah:
Wow it is almost impossible to pin point a single moment when I fell in love with music, perhaps it was always in my blood. I do remember lots of moments that stick out though. My parents would have lots of parties, my cousins and I would be sent up stairs to bed really early. In those days it was all about the bass line, I remember hearing those bass-lines coming up through the floor from the lovers rock and soul tunes they were spinning. Those bass lines where everywhere in those days, cars would shake the whole street with their sub woofers, shops pumped out choons when I went shopping with my mum and people even used to walk the street with ghetto blasters on their shoulder playing break beats. It felt like music was everywhere and such a big part of life. I think the fact that I can still remember choons from those days that I haven’t heard since goes to show that they became a part of me there and then. “Pass the duchie on the left hand side” lol

There was a time where Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston were like Tommy Mottola and Clive Davis’ pit bulls… This was a time where pretty much every major record label wanted a big voiced diva that could appeal to the masses, adult comtemporary ballads and pop. Among these women were Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, all but one has completely fallen off…
Mariah Carey survived because she broke away from her label’s definition of her and re-invented what a female artist could be and do… “Butterfly” (1997) was the beginning and millions of new fans later, even after the “Glitter” mess Mariah Carey is STILL arguably the baddest b**** in modern music…
Truthfully Mariah hasn’t competed with Whitney Houston since 1996, when they were both vying for the same seat at the top of Adult Contemporary’s “A” list. Don’t compare them… They don’t have the same fan base, audience or approach…Not anymore at least. Apples & Oranges at this point.
Fans and the public like to compare them because of there voices but honestly, Mariah nor Whitney are capable of half of what used to be… Mariah shot her voice way back in 96 on her “DayDream” Tour, while Whitney Houston spent the better part of the decade smoking hers into obscurity. Ms. Carey can still slay when she gets her rest and in the studio she can’t be match but Whitney’s abilities are still in question…
Though I’m sure Whitney’s new album is going to be everything it should be, she isn’t going to earn many new fans as much as ignite the old ones she left cold nearly 10 years ago… “I Look To You” will be a success. I don’t doubt that but whose really going to go out and buy this album that hasn’t bought a Whitney record before???
Mariah reaches so many. Her body, swag, music and lifestyle appeal to a whole new generation of fans. Females are inspired, dudes my age wanna chop her down and at the same time the 1990s fans have NEVER stopped supporting her, well most of them anyway… Mariah’s capable of much much MUCH more then any other female artist recording right now…
In short, Whitney Houston isn’t as commercially applicable as the world’s best selling female artist… She has failed to evolve and that makes she and Mariah Carey completely different…
Much love Whitney, no shade…
This is really going to be Clive Davis vs L.A Reid, those two are the ones that are going to try to turn this into a blood sport…
Whitney’s album will be in stores September 1st and Mariah’s will follow September 15th! Expect both divas to debut at #1 easy!

Mariah Carey will join the line-up at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
The “Obsessed” singer is set to take the stage at this year’s show, an insider exclusively reveals to Rap-Up.com. The 26th annual event will air September 13 from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
An official announcement is expected soon. Previously announced performers include Taylor Swift and Muse.
The appearance comes on the heels of Mariah’s new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, scheduled for release two days later on September 15. The last time she performed at the VMAs was in 2005 when the show was held in Miami.
Russell Brand will host the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, airing live on Sunday, September 13, at 9 p.m.

Baker released “A Night of Rapture — Live” in 2004. 
As for brand new music — either instead of or alongside the live project — Baker says there are “a couple of songs that I had in mind for a couple of artists that I think I’m going to use for myself.” She adds that the new music is “not a departure. It will be an Anita Baker record, but it will have a lot of surprising elements in it. We’ll take a lot of our contemporaries and bring them into my project where they may fit.”
One of those could be rapper Snoop Dogg, who Baker is working with on an adaptation of Curtis Mayfield’s “Give Me Your Love (Love Song)” from the “Superfly” soundtrack. “We do it in a very contemporary way, a very grown-up way,” Baker says. “It’s lovely — who knew that Snoop is madly in love with his wife, you know? We’ve got a chance to see that in the way his music has grown, so when he comes in to do dialogue over that love theme, it becomes very grown-up and contemporary at the same time.”
As for when we might hear, or see, something new, however, Baker is circumspect. “The record company (Blue Note) wants next spring, and I would love for that to happen,” she says. “That would be lovely, but we all are mindful of the fact that we want it to be right. So when they say spring, they really are planning for the fall. It’s like…I’m a mom. If we want to be at brunch at 1, I have to tell my kids 12 o’clock — you know what I mean?”

Whitney Houston has a very simple explanation for why it took so long to put out her forthcoming new album, I Look to You, and it has nothing to do with any personal drama she’s experienced since releasing 2002′s Just Whitney. She says she just wanted to make sure that it sounded right.
“Well, I can say taking your time and choosing carefully what fits you best always has worked for me,” Houston told MTV News. “It took me three years to do my first album. The quickest album I have ever done was My Love Is Your Love — it took me eight months.”
Houston, with Clive Davis at her side, explained that working with Davis on this album was like being “back at home,” and added that they truly understand each other when it comes to making music together. “This time, I was back at home with whom I belong with,” she laughed, looking to Davis. “We’re good partners. We make a good team because we both love music. I’m talking about music with lyric, great melodies, standards that will last a lifetime for people.”
Describing the effort as “a labor of love,” she said Davis pushed her to her limits to make sure she put out her best possible music. “And [it was] work for me, cause he kept sending me back in there saying, ‘Well, no, we got to do this again,’ ” she said.
In addition to having Davis’ support on the record, Houston also worked with Swizz Beatz, Alicia Keys and R. Kelly for the record. “But I’m humbled by the fact that people wanted to be a part of the album — were calling in saying, ‘Man, I gotta get on there,’ ” she said. “I was humbled and I feel blessed about the whole project.”

Singer/songwriter The-Dream announced via his Twitter page yesterday (July 23) that his third studio album, “Love King,” slated for a late 2009 release, will be his last.
“I am engaged and ‘Love King’ IS going to be my LAST album!” he tweeted. In a subsequent post, The-Dream explained, “It is going to be [his] last bcuz, everybody is trying to ‘KILL THE DREAM!’ [The Dream is] the ONLY one that can end [his] career,” although he did clarify he “will still be producing, writing, and featuring on other artist albums though.”
During a video interview with Vlad.tv that has been making its rounds on the internet recently, The-Dream said he has finished recording three additional records for the deluxe edition of his sophomore album, “Love Vs. Money,” although no release date has been announced yet. The singer talked about his desire to add songs that would make the album “more upbeat ’cause it was a real dark album,” stating that one of the new tracks is titled “Hit In On The Road,” a “real fun” record.
The-Dream is said to be in the studio with Mariah Carey, working on her upcoming album, “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” among others. The first single, “Obsessed,” co-written and produced by Carey, The-Dream and Christopher “Tricky” Stewart is currently No. 28 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts.

‘I look like my brother and my cousin Chris,’ Mimi says of video character everyone compares to Eminem.
Is it Eminem or isn’t it? Well, Mariah Carey herself insists that the stalker she played in her “Obsessed” video looks more like one of her male relatives than the rapper.
“Everybody started having their own speculations about who the stalker was,” she told MTV News. “I’m like, look, when I look at that stalker and me with the beard and the whole 9 yards, I look like my cousin Chris. I do. I look like my brother and my cousin Chris. So basically, you know, all the speculation about who I’m playing in the video, it’s not accurate.”
Since Nick Cannon and the video’s director, Brett Ratner, have also said that the song and video aren’t about Eminem, maybe it is just a crazy coincidence.
So who thought to put Carey in drag for the video? Ratner has said that Carey was the brain behind the getup, but the singer said that it was actually her hubby, Cannon, who thought up the idea to dress his ultra-feminine wife as a man. “Well, I live for a disguise, but … I love the anonymity of it,” she said. “But actually it was Nick’s idea, ’cause we were going after different comedians, comediennes.”
Though Carey credits Cannon for the brilliant idea, she also says she was able to pull it off thanks to all the acting she’s been doing. “The thing is that Nick was like, ‘Why don’t you just play the stalker?’ and I’m like, ‘I could do that ’cause I’ve been acting lately,’ ” she explained. “I’ve done a lot of different things and I’m very proud of the work that I’ve done lately, but the thing is that this was the chance to work with Brett Ratner.”
