Nicki Minaj Talks About Working With Mariah!!!

Nicki Minaj says she was so surprised that she got a call to work with Mariah Carey on the remix of “Up Out My Face” that she kept the collaboration very hush-hush.

“That one, I didn’t believe until I was physically in the studio that I was doing with something with Mariah,” the New York native told MTV News last week. “I didn’t even tell anyone I shot a video with Mariah, because I didn’t even believe. In the back of my mind, I felt like, ‘This video is not gonna come out. There’s no way I’m gonna do a video with Mariah Carey before I even put out my album.’ Then, when it came out, I think it was the #1 video on YouTube in one day, something crazy like that. She’s an icon, I’ve loved her since I was little, like ‘Vision of Love,’ ‘Someday.’ I was one of those little girls in the mirror singing her songs with my mother.”

Much like her fellow Mariah Carey collaborator and good friend Gucci Mane, Minaj said the real Mariah was nothing like she imagined.

“When I met her, she was so funny and silly,” Nicki recalled. “I thought when I was gonna work with Mariah, [she] was gonna be like this diva. But we were cracking jokes the whole day. She’s a sweet, down-to-earth person.”

Nicki and Mimi had their names written on two giant baby doll boxes in the video. In the Nick Cannon-directed clip, the two bust out and have a good time changing outfits and playing with men. The doll angle plays perfectly with Nicki’s “black Barbie” persona.

“I think it was dope,” Minaj said about the video. “A lot of times, more famous artists or more confident artists take from a younger artist but they’ll never include you in that. I feel like she liked the whole doll thing and she wanted to do it with me. But she said that: She said, ‘Everybody’s gonna say “she’s doing Nicki.” But I told her, she’s always had a doll persona, like all that ‘doll baby’ [stuff]. So it goes perfect with Barbie and we had fun. That’s all that matters.”

Bob Marley’s Annual Birthday Celebration Cancelled!!!

Posted in BITCHASSNESS, EVENTS, MUSIC, NEWS, POPULAR MUSIC, TRUECLEFMUSIC.COM, trueclefmusic with tags , on February 9, 2010 by younravj

Jamaica’s annual concert to commemorate musical legend and Rastafarian icon Bob Marley, has been canceled for the first time in 18 years.

The event scheduled for February 6 in the city of Negril was called off after promoter Clive Pringle was denied a permit.

Police report that Pringle’s birthday bash for Marley was canned because it was notorious for going over its 2 a.m. curfew and attracted a number of noise complaints from angry residents.

Bob Marley would have been 65 this year.

Although the concert was put on hold Bob Marley’s birthday was celebrated in L.A. with the first annual Jammin & Wailin art exhibit.

Taking place on his birthday at Mr. Musichead art gallery in L.A., the exhibit displayed photos and art pieces of Marley with proceeds donated to Doctors Without Borders for Haiti relief.

Press Reviews: Mariah at Scotiabank Place, Ottawa

Superstar diva’s voice still surprisingly strong
By Lynn Saxberg, The Ottawa Citizen

Mariah Carey made her performance debut in Ottawa last night in front of a smallish crowd of 2,900 at Scotiabank Place. Although she arrived on stage late, seemed to rush through songs and took breaks to conserve her energy, these were not simply attention-getting techniques from the famously difficult diva.

No, the superstar had a little cold, she informed us early in the evening, picked up from one of her dancers. It cut into her sleep, she added, “but here I am. The show must go on.”

In a gold-and-sequined princess dress that showed off her ample cleavage, Carey made a fashionably late entrance dangling in a cocoon-like bundle that descended from the ceiling to the stage.

The full-length gown was torn away, revealing a short, leg-baring skirt as her breathy soprano fluttered into Butterfly, then darted from Shake It Off, Touch My Body and Fly Like a Bird.

Her voice was surprisingly strong, despite the sniffles, but there were backup singers and electronic effects enhancing her natural vocal power. A full band and a contingent of dancers accompanied Carey on stage, and she occasionally let them take over while she rested her voice and changed outfits.

“I’m not going to complain because I love everybody,” Carey said, as if to remind herself not to complain. “No matter what you do, you can’t make me hate you.”

At one point, Carey played up her diva reputation with a tongue-in-cheek bit that involved calling her hair and make-up folks onto the stage for a touch-up.

It was evidently supposed to be playful and self-deprecating, but the sense of fun was dampened by her poker-face delivery, probably due to the fact that she repeats the gag every night.

Sipping something from a champagne glass (she said it was water, Carey seemed to come to life a bit later, and made a point of referring to her new line of champagne.

On the whole, though, Carey gave an uninspired performance — one hopes her champagne isn’t quite so flat.

Diva’s dazzle fades by finale
By Denis Armstrong, Ottawa Sun

Mariah Carey was at her diva-best at Scotiabank Place Saturday night, and not in a good way. You would think that a star as big as Carey – 175 million records sold and a trunkload of Grammy awards – would have been a major event.

But fewer than 3,000 glammed-up, hardcore Carey worshippers even bothered to show up for her current Angel’s Advocate show, which is touring North America and getting mixed reviews.

Perhaps it was the price of tickets, which went as high as $175 a piece. Ouch!

To be honest, after the show on Saturday night, I’d be surprised if she even got enough of an audience to fill the National Arts Centre, based on Carey’s performance on, and off stage.

Mariah is the goddess of Grammys, the Princess Di of the divas, as frail as she is fabulous. But when she sings, she turns into a soul-singing superhero, with a five-octave range that can still shatter crystal champagne glasses.

And last night, she did plenty of both.

I’ve never been to a concert before that was so much about the star, rather than the music. Celine Dion’s show here in 2009 had its narcissistic moments, but nothing on Carey’s scale.

All the self-centred diva-like antics might have been worthwhile if they were sincere but Carey’s struck me as all part of the show. And a bit of a lazy show at that.

The show started some 40 minutes late. Of course, all was forgiven the instant Carey finally made her entrance, and as grand an entrance as you would expect, with Carey suspended 15 metres in the air, hanging there like an angel, one with God-like cleavage in a dress that resembled a glass of champagne while the band played the Butterfly Intro and Daydream Interlude.

Then, it all seemed to go downhill from there.

For a scant 90 minutes, Carey treated the fans to a slickly rehearsed, loosely choreographed musical fantasy into her glittery life, parading nearly as many expensive evening gowns and sexy outfits as there were songs, mostly taken from her last album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel with a few classics thrown in.

Backed by a five-piece band and with 10 dancers providing a little boogie, a hoarse Carey opened with Shake It Off, Touch My Body and Fly Like a Bird while posing like a contestant in a beauty pageant at centre stage.

Later, she blamed being late on a cold that one of the 10 dancers she’s touring with gave her. So it wasn’t her fault. Hand that girl an Academy Award nomination for best dramatic performance by a diva.

I mean, c’mon, who else but Carey would bring her own makeup artist onstage for a quick touch-up, or performing Always Be My Baby from a white chaise-lounge and drinking from a fluted glass?

From that point on, Carey seemed to lose interest in the show, spending half her time backstage and leaving her backup crew to cover yet another costume change with an able cover of Michael Jackson’s Rock With You before la Carey re-emerged to channel Diana Ross on Ain’t No Mountain/Love Hangover in an inaudible whisper.

By now, the novelty was wearing about as thin as Carey’s pablum pop, including Obsessed and Emotions, tunes as girly as gigs get. Like watching a Say Yes To The Dress marathon. I wasn’t that disappointed when Carey seemed suddenly in a hurry to quit the show.

SPIN THE WHEEL: Rihanna’s “Rated R” v. Chris Brown’s “Graffiti”!!!

Posted in ALBUM COVERS, ALBUMS, CHRIS BROWN, COMPARISONS, DEF JAM, MUSIC, NEW ALBUMS, NEW MUSIC, NEWS, POPULAR MUSIC, RIHANNA, TRUECLEFMUSIC.COM, trueclefmusic with tags , , , , , , on February 6, 2010 by younravj

Y’all knew it was coming!!! Rihanna threw Chris ALL under the bus to promote her new album, interviews with 2020 and almost every other major media outlet,  which at this point seems to have paid off. She’s gone platinum faster then she did with “Good Girl Gone Bad” and had a top 10 hit with “Hard” her collabo with Young Jeezy.

Chris was able to muster a little press from the a** whoop’n scandal that unfolded back in early 2009 also. He had some success with “Transform Ya” thanks to friend Lil Wayne but ”Graffiti” debuted with one hundred or so thousand copies sold it’s first week, compared to Rihanna’s 200k+ and compared to the almost 400k Chris’s previous album shifted during week one.

The content on both albums are on point! Chris trades the r&b sounds heard on his first couple of albums for a mostly pop feel. Rihanna pulls a similar stunt but cuts the commercial pop calories, opting for an urban dance pop collection of songs produced by StarGate, Tricky Stewart, Will.I.AM and others. She’s in Beyonce’s box with “Rated R” (“B’Day” not Sasha Fierce) while Chris is trying to appeal to the fans he garnered when he crossed over more then a year ago, the very fans that have turned there back on him.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some r&b tracks on “Graffit” but overall all this album is nothing like Jamie Foxx’s “Intuition” or Trey Songz “Ready”.. no shade. It’s a good album, “Famous Girl”, “Transform Ya” and “Take My Time” are among my favorite tracks but bottom line, he didn’t wait long enough, didnt stay away, didn’t give the public enough time to forgive & forget. Promoting and dropping an album this close to Rihanna’s new release was a horrible idea and this album will never get shine it deserves..

Riri on the other hand has become an artist, stretching her creativity and her vocals further and fuller then on any other album before. She brings the fire with “Wait Your Turn”, “Rockstar 101″, “RudeBoy” and “Photographs” (a song clearly about her relationship with Chris). This is perhaps the best album of her career and the fans and media alike aren’t oblivious. She used all her resources, energy and time to make sure she’d trounce her ex.. Mission accomplished!

Game: Rihanna!

Say What??? Mariah DOESN’T Make Nick Wear Those Suits.. That’s ALL Him!!!

Posted in BITCHASSNESS, MARIAH CAREY, NEWS, POPULAR MUSIC, TRUECLEFMUSIC.COM, trueclefmusic with tags , , , , on February 5, 2010 by younravj

LOL!!! I had always thought it was a combination of Mariah and her management that insisted Nick Cannon dawn these extra ill fitting, used to be my daddy suits he’s been rock’n since they married in 2008.. Turns out that Mariah HATES the damn suits and wishes he’d be more casual. Nick said “she likes it when I’m just wear’n some jeans and my Timbaland boots”..

So why the hell is he dressing like Diddy??? It’s because he’s trying not to look like her boy husband, when in actuality all that just makes there age difference more vivid…

I don’t know if you’ll noticed but Mariah’s been MUCHO more conservative since she married Nick, trading her sown into Versace mini dresses for Donna Karen, Chanel and Roberto Cavalli red carpet ensembles.. She still cuts up from time to time though..

Jill Scott Being Sued By Label!!!

Posted in ALBUMS, BUSINESS!, JILL SCOTT, MUSIC, NEWS, POPULAR MUSIC, R&B, RNB, SOUL, TRUECLEFMUSIC.COM, trueclefmusic with tags , , , on February 5, 2010 by younravj

Jill Scott is being sued by her longtime record label, which is accusing the multi-platinum R&B songstress of skipping out halfway through a six-album contract and potentially owing millions of dollars in damages.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by L.A.-based Hidden Beach Records on Feb. 3, claims that the label and its founder, Steve McKeever, helped launch Scott’s career and nurtured her into a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter but was unceremoniously dumped in October after a 10-plus year relationship.

“Hidden Beach is shocked by her decision not only because Scott has apparently chosen to leave the Hidden Beach family,” the complaint reads, “but also because Scott is contractually required to deliver three more albums to Hidden Beach.”

The complaint alleges causes of action for breach of contract and damages owed under a section of California’s Labor Code sometimes known as the “De Havilland Law.” Named after actress Olivia De Havilland’s successful fight in the ’40s against long-term studio deals, it provides that talent cannot be bound by personal services contracts for longer than seven years.

Hidden Beach isn’t disputing that Scott’s deal violated the seven-year rule but the law carves out a requirement that certain recording artists who wish to terminate their lengthy deals must reimburse their labels in the amount the labels would have received under the terms of the contracts.

Since breaking onto the scene with the double-platinum selling “Who Is Jill Scott?” album in 2000, Scott’s studio albums (and live albums) have generated millions in revenue. So while Hidden Beach’s alleged damages are unspecified in the complaint, under California law they could total several million dollars.

The lawsuit is unusually detailed in its description of the small label’s close relationship with Scott. She clearly was the center of attention for McKeever. The complaint alleges he paid her million-dollar advances when he wasn’t required to, allowed her to keep merchandising revenue, paid $450,000 to fund a concert DVD that Scott later asked not be released, bought her lavish gifts and indulged her desire to slow her recording schedule to pursue an acting career (Scott has appeared in the films “Houndog,” “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?” and HBO’s “No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency”).

“Hidden Beach feels that Jill Scott is an incredibly talented artist,” the company’s lawyer Lawrence Hinkle told us. “No one regrets that this lawsuit had to be filed more than Hidden Beach, but its hands were tied and it had no other option.”

A call to Scott’s attorney Stephen Barnes was not immediately returned.

Mariah’s new song with Nicki Minaj is showing MUCHO promise, making a huge jump on the r&b/hiphop chart, nearly 50 spaces.. The video for the song has alot to do with this. I think Mariah’s finally chosen a single that can resurrect her album’s promo campaign and tackle the top 20!!!

“Angels Cry” ft Ne-Yo took the song’s place at #97. I wish she had opted to release one song from the regular album and one song from the re-release. In this scenario the public would get to hear the genius of the original project plus the new content. It should have been “Up Out My Face” & “It’s A Wrap”!!! I’ve come to realize that there’s no one better to manage Mariah’s career then myself! :)
